Frederick Hermann Reber, a beloved son of Barryville, NY, passed away peacefully on
September 4, 2024, at the age of 77. Born on May 6, 1947, in New York City, Fred dedicated
his life to the small hamlet he called home and the cherished traditions that defined him.
Fred’s early years were marked by the unique experience of growing up in Reber’s
Restaurant, the family-owned establishment renowned for its authentic German cuisine.
The restaurant was more than a business; it was a cornerstone of Fred’s childhood, where
he developed his deep pride in his German heritage. Fred’s memories were filled with the
joy of fishing, swimming, and daring leaps off the Barryville Bridge with his friends, Bobby,
Jimmy, and Charlie.
Fred was a 1965 honors graduate (so he says) of New York Military Academy in Cornwall,
NY. As a member of the swim team, he was often found shining Donald Trump’s shoes.
Upon graduation, Fred met some of his best buds at Woodmont (Jack, Alan, Dick, Richie
and Greg) at Nathaniel Hawthorne College in Antrim, New Hampshire graduating in 1969
with a degree in Business.
Throughout his life, Fred wore many hats with distinction. Whether manning the velvet
rope, overseeing guests as a maître d’, or working tirelessly in the kitchen, Fred’s dedication
to his family’s restaurant was unwavering. His pride in his German roots was evident in
every dish he served and every interaction he had which led him to spawn the first ever Von
Steuben Day Parade in Yulan, NY. Donned in his very own lederhosen, he always beamed
seeing the whole town oompahing garbed in their Bavarian hats, which became an annual
tradition.
In addition to his role at Reber’s Restaurant, Fred was a successful realtor for over 40 years,
operating Reber Realty with integrity and commitment. His entrepreneurial spirit extended
to his passion for adventure, as he was the sole pilot for Fred’s Fearless Flying Photos and
an antique dealer at The Squire’s Barn. Fred was also notorious for his crazy ideas and
inventions that often came to light 30 years too late! And finally, he owned and operated
Reber River Trips, offering white-water rafting experiences to thrill-seekers returning him to
his beloved Delaware River.
Fred’s inventive nature and love for challenges were evident in his various pursuits. Though
he often grappled with the frustrations of golf, (Just ask Caesar!) his enthusiasm never
waned. His passion for hunting and his role as president of Highland Field and Stream were
testaments to his love for the outdoors and the camaraderie of his fellow enthusiasts. (He
regularly bragged how his skills embarrassed the likes of Matty, Frank, Little Fred and JT!)
Recently, the club inaugurated Camp Reber in honor of Fred’s service and dedication. Fred
was verklempt.
Fred is survived by his devoted wife Paula and his spirited pup Star. Married by the
honorable Judge Troy on the Brooklyn Bridge they complemented their small-town lifestyles
with NYC trips and Florida beach days. Fred was extremely proud of their renovated home
and their garden in West Palm Beach. Together they entertained friends, boated, golfed, hit
karaoke at Benny’s on the Beach and enjoyed cocktails at The Meat Market happy hour.
Fred loved the oysters and his Tito’s, no fruit.
Fred is also survived by his children Hermann Frederick Reber (New York City) Erin Reber
Howey (Peter) (Wynnewood, PA) and John Thomas Vogt (Glen Spey, NY) and their mother
Eileen Malone Reber (Venice, FL).
And you all have heard Fred brag about his grandsons, Hudson 14 and Nash 12. He claims
they got their smarts from him. Both boys loved spending time in the country and at the
club making Manhattans and driving underage with the hunt master. His love for the
outdoors is also in their DNA.
Fred’s cherished family and friends will remember him for his crooked smile, off color
jokes, and his indomitable spirit. His legacy will live on in the stories of his adventurous life,
(often exaggerated!) his contributions to Barryville, and the many lives he touched through
his various endeavors.
A mass service will be held at St. Jacobi Church, 108 Glen Drive Shohola, PA at 11:30 am
on September 15, 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to
https://canthurtsteelfoundation.org.
A celebration of Fred’s life will also be held on this date at 2:00 pm at Highland Field and
Stream, Clark Road, Eldred, NY, a fitting tribute to a man who embodied the spirit of the
Catskills and whose presence will be deeply missed.
Rest in peace, Fearless Fred. Your legacy will forever be a part of Barryville’s heart.
